This Thursday, May 8th, the Maine Youth Rock Orchestra (MYRO) will be making their debut at Port City Music Hall. The show will feature guest singers, Lyle Divinsky and Sara Hallie Richardson.
The whole idea behind the night is pretty cool and unique… Not far back, MYRO founder Kevin Oates came up with the idea of creating a non-profit organization with the intent of giving young string players (ages 12 - 18) a new vehicle to showcase their talents. For me, when I think of an orchestral based concert, I typically think of the cliché scene where an audience is dressed to the nines, seated in an uncomfortable balcony, and listening to a regurgitation of Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”. MYRO is virtually the complete opposite.
What makes MYRO so fresh is the fact that they will perform all original music, written by artists local to Maine, with a rock band and two powerhouse vocalists. The performance will take place in one of Portland, Maine’s best rock and dance venues, Port City Music Hall.
Come on! New and original music played with a 22 piece orchestra?? I’m in!
